ouch

I spent a contorted night, with Many Cats fighting forbed space and duvet, and generally they won.

Woke this morning with what felt like a raging hangover; deeply unfair, as no drink taken. My knees are very bad at the moment, due to the cold.snap. And today my shoulders are very achey, due to the aforementioned cat wrangling. I suspect some of this skeletal stuff is down to stress too, of which I am suffering an excess.

I have taken 2 ibuprofen, 2 mugs of Earl Grey, and a crumpet. Hope it eases up soon, because it is No Fun At All.

working weekend

we spent most of the weekend working, as previously detailed. I don’t think we’ve had a full day off for about four weeks, and it’s starting to show … making silly mistakes with server config files and flailing formed a large part of yesterday afternoon 🙁

which meant that the Complicated Cooking I’d planned fell into abeyance – it will have to be Duck with Lentils and Ceps tonight. Anyway, we scoffed a full english for brunch, and all we could manage at the end of a long afternoon was a bag of Kettle chips and some chocolate raisins. Very healthy. I was thwarted in my probably foolish desire for a last half glass of wine by finding that the bottle I’d put in the fridge was in fact *red*, due to perlmonger‘s inability to put the white wine in the left side of the wine rack. Probably just as well.

caught up with Dr Who (huge fun) and the second episode of Jekyll, which I am enjoying enormously. Best line, most definitely: “I’ve got my pride” – I’m still chortling.

in other news, Liessa is not mending as well as we’d hoped, and is now on 5mg of steroids a day. And not enjoying it, and neither are we. The first pill went down reasonably easily, as we had surprise on our side; yesterday, not so good. We got it down her, but we are scratched quite badly, and she is extremely suspicious. Not quite sure how to deal with this … kevlar, possibly.

any sort of DIY is enhanced by the presence of cats in the house, we find.

yesterday’s task was to put up a nice Ikea corner unit in the hall, so that we had somewhere to put all the clutter of cameras, chargers, phones, etc. Pete got it all assembled, and then informed me that we had a problem … and indeed we did, as you can see 🙂

like a hole in the head …

Iggy looking mournful

Iggy has an abscess in his left cheek. A *huge* abscess.

so far we have done three trips to the vet, including one this morning (thus paying Sunday rates, and missing Ivor B’s (WINOLJ) birthday party.

and there’s be another trip on Wednesday, and possibly another after that.

he’s feeling very sorry for himself this afternoon, and is following us round the house, raouling in a mournful manner. I hope the poor chap feels better soon.

the weekend

the weekend started badly, really … detritus, our linux development and staging server, got overheated during the day on Friday, and we rebooted him. Some time between 8 and 10 on Friday evening, he crashed. Would he reboot?

of course not.

so perlmonger spent Saturday in the server room back bedroom, cannibalising bits of machines together. He decided to take the opportunity to upgrade the rather ancient and venerable version of Linux on the box, and is now up to his oxters in building and configuring things.

I whizzed over to Asda on Saturday afternoon while the foopball was on – the roads were deserted, as was the store. This World Cup is not altogether a bad thing.

a break was taken yesterday to trundle to Cirencester for lunch and natterings with landsmand and valkyrie_k, who provided us with a fabulous carpaccio salad with sundry multiple accompaniments, and then a humungous cheeseboard. A very jolly time was had by all.

Iggy has a poorly ear, and has been to the vet for a jab; also, antibiotic pills have to be perpetrated. He’s been very miz indeed, and we managed to get yesterday’s pills down him easily. This morning, he wasn’t having *any* of it, so is presumably on the mend. I have no idea how to get pills down a strong male Bengal cat who doesn’t want them, so I suspect it’ll be back to the vet for another jab. More expense – it’ll have to come out of his pocket money.

gardening with cats

we went and bought the plants this afternoon for the baskets and hanging planters. Here they are, complete with furry helpers.

everything is now planted (apart from the growbag’s tomato and pepper plants). And, as generally happens to me, I was out watering these bloody baskets in torrential rain, with thunder and lightning overhead.

thank *you*, weather ghod.

the horror

we keep a wicker shopping basket hanging on a hook on the coat rack, and inside that lives a smaller jute bag for light shopping duties.

as I needed to pop out to the bakery and the off licence (for milk and cream, before you all nod in a knowing manner), the small jute bag would suffice.

so I put on my coat, put my hand into the outer bag and *screamed*, as I encountered something quite alien to the jutey texture I was expecting.
What on earth was it, then?
