  1. Bloody lousy idea, I live alone in a Band B property and hence pay approximately nadge-all in council tax, but earn over twice the median national wage. I’d be massively worse off. No.

  2. Suddenly I’m 13 again and back in the kitchen at home in Northern Ireland with mum prepapring dinner while she told me that local incoome tax was a damn good idea, being more equitable, and if they did it in Canada in the 60s, she couldn’t see why they couldn’t manage it in the UK in the 1980s. She then went on to complain for the nth time, that she vote Liberal (as they were then) if only she could. It was a good dinner as well, iirc: mum’s homemade mince pie with mash.

Dad on the other hand was a Labour man on the whole but being an income and wealth distribution economist, he was also all for income tax rather than indirect or property taxes.

  3. I’d doubtless be worse off, living in alone in a Band A property and earning quite a reasonable amount. However, I also think it’s a better idea than the current system so I’ve signed anyway.
