weekend 18-19 nov 06

some weekends are nice, some weekends are busy – an occasional one is both. And this one just passed was indeed one of those.

two badgersSaturday saw me up and going fairly early, baking a batch of bananananananana and pumpkin seed muffins for the local Wildlife Trust Fayre. I delivered these still warm, and they seemed to go down pretty well. I escaped from the Fayre with my wallet reasonably intact – 5 books for a quid, 2 hyacinth glasses for a quid, a goosegog crumble which was very nearly as nice as one I might have made, and a rather nice mounted print of two badgers thus.

I popped home for a mug of tea, then sallied forth to Taunton Leisure in Bedminster, stopping only at Riverside Garden Centre for a brace of hyacinth bulbs – none to be seen, sadly. And Taunton Leisure wanted *£14.95* for walking sox (mine shrank in the wash), so I departed. Called into Asda for some bagels for lunch, and my attention was caught by a very nice pair of trousers in their sale for £8, so I bore them away too.

from there, I trundled to Marcruss in Hotwell (a glorious boleyhole of a shop) and purchased two pairs of walking socks for 7 quid each, and a really nice black padded waistcoat – ideal for walks, and just what I wanted. And a bargain at 20 of your earth pounds.

while I was doing this, perlmonger was out mending fences – literally. See here for further details (site not quite finished yet, we know some of the layout is borked). No doubt he’ll tell you all about it himself later.

after lunch, we took out 30 odd Parish Plan Questionnaires for delivery, then I came home and made the crimble cake, and cooked 3 lbs of mince into spag bol (which takes a surprisingly long time, given the chopping of celery and carrots and onions and mushrooms and stuff).

then Pete cooked dinner (South Indian Cabbage and rice – which works far better than you might think from the recipe; it’s one of our new favourites. And we collapsed in front of the X Factor (yes, I know its people TV, but I like it, ok?). Oh, and ate the goosegog crumble.

Sunday I wrote up and logged another 16 Questionnaires out, and took them out for delivery. I brought one home – no. 5 was up a steep flight of steps up to the first storey on the outside of a row of shops, and vertigo got the better of me, so I let Pete do it. Then we had a very nice omelette – well, I say “omelette”, but it was mostly filling, held together with too much a lot of egg. It had bacon and shallot and chiz and mushrooms in. And we had a bagel between us. Then we went down to Tickenham garden centre, who had no hyacinths. And then we went over to Cleeve garden centre – there must be a Somerset-wide shortage of prepared hyacinth bulbs, I got some croci and tulips and jonquils, but had to order the hyacinths from online when I got home.

another swift mug of tea, then out for a proper walk around the railway line path and the top of the village for an hour and a half until it got too dark. Home with a stack of photos, of which 24 were Photoshopped and uploaded to Flickr, with a break for a mountain of spag bol and another episode of A Very Peculiar Practice.
so we didn’t do much this weekend, really …
