decisions, decisions

so, last night I finally got round to vaping my W2K install, and putting XP Pro on my main workstation. Not an upgrade, oh no – a new install. So am in the process of installing hundreds of bloody applications, finding CDs, registration numbers, shareware progs, etc.

and in the middle of all this, my iPaq arrives. And I have to get four years’ worth of data off the Palm and on to the iPaq and I don’t have any of their apps installed yet, and I ought to be doing work for clients, and it’s a new toy, and and ….

I found it interesting what order I did start re-installing, though – first off was mIRC; can’t be too far away from techie friends when you’re building a new OS. Then a complete Office XP, on the basis that it would be good to get the reboots out of the way early.

then Mozilla, so I could read my mail,. Then Ameol for CIX, and The Bat! for POP3 mail, and Putty to see what was going on on the web server.

this morning I remembered that a virus checker might be a good idea, so did that, and am now soldiering on with sundry bits and bobs. And the iPaq is calling to me …

just popped out to look at The Pond, and it seems we did something right. All the fish are surviving – thriving, even. And there are four water beetles in there, and two dragonflies – one bright red, and one bright blue – hovering round the plants. All very ecologically sound 🙂

a morning poem

I woke early one morning
the earth lay cool and still
when suddenly a tiny bird
Perched upon my window sill.

He sang a song so lovely
so carefree and so gay,
that slowly all my troubles,
began to slip away.

He sang of far off places
of laughter and of fun,
it seemed his very trilling,
brought up the morning sun.

I stirred beneath the covers
crept slowly out of bed
then gently shut the window
and crushed his fucking head.
I’m not a morning person.

Telewest Blueyonder, purveyors of our cable modem, are offering a 1Mb service (i.e. twice the speed that we have now), for the impressively modest additional cost of UKP10 per month.

will we upgrade? You bet your sweet bippie, as they used to say on a television programme that was around when Noah’s ark was but a gleam in his eye …

how the mighty are fallen ..

my husband, Pete, has finally succumbed to the lure of LJ. I really, really wanted him to be ShedMan, but he has settled for perlmonger. This has caused a certain amount of cold staring in the house this morning, as you might expect.

he is also, of course, Male Blob to jordan_cats, who rule the house with an iron paw in an iron glove.

more fishies!

popped out to buy some more fish for the pond – 3 ghost koi, 2 fantail goldfish (1 orange and 1 pale), and an orn’ry goldfish. We’ve bunged their polythene bag in the water to let the temperature adjust, and let’s just hope that piscine war doesn’t break out later this evening. That’ll make eleven fish in total – they’re incredibly relaxing to watch. I want an aquarium indoors now.

while we were out, followed a car with one of those Baby on Board stickers. Why do people do that? The only time it might be useful to know there’s a baby in the car is if the car is mangled in a traffic accident. How many of these sticker stickers take the sticker out where there isn’t a baby on board?

now I’m off to cook a simple summer supper (how alliterative!) for some good friends – looking forward to a nice evening.
