  1. Though it is worth glancing at The Register
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/09/13/iphone_two_dot_one/
others tell a different story. “Upgrade to 2.1 made my already bad call drop situation far worse. Whereas I drop 20-25 calls a day with the iPhone (it was 2-3 a day with Verizon Wireless), I have been dropped at least 50 times today after the upgrade to 2.1,” says Sheeko .

“The iPhone is an iFlop that will haunt apple for some time to come. This along with the the stupid idiosyncrasies, iTunes consistently crashes with outlook Sync, A miniature search button under contacts, Terrible battery life, Unbearably slow response time to user input, shows Apple’s new direction to focus on revenue over quality.”

I have an iPhone (non-3G) and I love *some* of it (web browsing, email etc.), some things I tolerate (the keyboard) and some things suck (battery life is TERRIBLE, I took it off charge this morning before leaving home and it’s already run out today so it’s back on charge now, no support for transferring files by bluetooth, such as my contacts from another phone, can’t use standard headphones with the older model as the headphone socket is too far recessed (I have an adapter to correct this!)

For portable web surfing and the maps (fantastic!) it’s brilliant … as a phone I don’t use it, and for text entry, it can be a pain. YMMV!

But black is definitely the one true colour for it!

    1. I have an iPod Touch which I love to bits. I’m quite happy to keep the 3G off most of the time – I’m usually in the house and generally only want mail when I’m out, and 2G is fine for that.

I hardly use any call minutes – I’ve paying ridiculous amounts to Orange on contract so I’ve been waiting for the PAYG iPhone to come out. What I want is data. I get on fine with the keyboard now, and the new iPhone has a proper headphone socket.

I use Macs full time, and indeed have *never* used Outlook, I’m proud to say.

Still dithering about colour, though 🙂

    2. But where publishes the story that puts the moans into context? The one along the lines of “Nine million nine hundred thousand iPhone users find little or nothing to complain about.”

      Nah. Not news or something.

  2. Black. Go black!

Just to put the Register article above in some kind of perspective; the minor update just before this most recent one seemed to considerably improve my battery life, and the 2.1 update seems to have improved my 3G reception – I’m certainly getting 3G signals in places where it used to revert to Edge. So YMMV!

The battery life isn’t excellent, but whether it’s directly because of the updates, or just because the device is a little ‘worn-in’ now, the battery life in my handset is much better than it was when I first bought it. Very noticeably so.

    1. Dunno – neither of us are phone whores, are we? But I am safely out of contract, and having used an iPod Touch for a few weeks, I’m hooked.

  3. Things of beauty, they are. Although I don’t know how nice they’d be with Windows, and the iPod Touch is not playing well on Pete’s Ubuntu box.
